The flag of France is one of the oldest and most commonly recognized flags in the world. It is made up of three vertical stripes of equal dimension with royal blue along the hoist, white in the middle, and red along the fly. Adopted originally in 1790 with the colors reversed, the French flag was revised in 1794 to the modern form of today. White, the color of royalty, was added to the traditional French colors of red and blue to form this “drapeau tricolore” meaning “tricolor flag” in French.
