Half-Staff Maine State Flags – Honoring Michael Backus

American Flags and Maine Flags to fly at half-staff Friday, January 11th through Sunday, January 13th in the state of Maine in honor of Lieutenant Colonel Michael Backus.

According to the office of the governor:
LTC Backus was a Maine Army National Guard Active Guard and Reserve officer serving with the Joint Forces Headquarters. He died unexpectedly on Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, while performing his duties at Camp Keyes in Augusta. Backus, a graduate of Mt. Blue High School in 1986, and a 1990 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, served his country in a number of different capacities of increasing responsibility throughout his 22-year career.

Representative Edwards served Converse County in the Wyoming House of Representatives from 2001-2008 and as a County Commissioner from 2009-2012.

American Flags and New Jersey Flags to fly at half-staff Wednesday, January 2nd in the state of New Jersey in honor of US Army General H. Norman Schwarzkopf.

According to the office of the governor:
United States Army General H. Norman Schwarzkopf’s service to our nation included two tours of duty in Vietnam, during which General Schwarzkopf earned three Silver Stars for valor, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and three Distinguished Service Medals. General Schwarzkopf also commanded the international coalition forces led by the United States during Operation Desert Storm.

Rev. Aiona was an elected member of the Board of Education for 20 years and an Episcopal priest for nearly 50 years.

Half-Staff South Dakota Flags – Honoring Burdette Solum

American Flags and South Dakota Flags to fly at half-staff Thursday, January 3rd in honor of Representative Burdette Solum.

According to the office of the governor:
Solum served nine years in the South Dakota House of Representatives, representing his native Watertown. After serving a single term from 1991-1992, Solum returned to the House to fill a vacancy in 1998, serving until 2004. Solum was a 21-year veteran of the South Dakota National Guard, and his unit was activated during the Korean War. He was also the father of current Rep. Roger Solum, also of Watertown.

Half-Staff South Dakota Flags – Honoring Justice Frank Henderson

American Flags and South Dakota Flags to fly at half-staff Wednesday, January 2nd in honor of Justice Frank “Rudy” Henderson.

According to the office of the governor:
Frank “Rudy” Henderson was an associate justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court from 1979 -1994. Prior to that service, he was a state circuit judge in the Seventh Circuit from 1975 – 1979. Henderson also served in the South Dakota Senate, representing Rapid City, from 1965 -1966 and 1969 -1970, and he was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor in 1970. Henderson was a veteran of the United States Army, and earned a Bronze Star for his service in the Korean War.
