Austria Flags

Adopted in 1984, the flag of Austria is comprised of three red and white horizontal stripes of equal proportion, with the white stripe in the center. The state flag of Austria features the coat of arms at its center. The colors of the triband, some believe, come from the battle-bloodied tunic of Duke Leopold V in the Battle of Ptolemais in 1191, during which the duke’s tunic remained white only under his wide belt. Legend has it that the duke waved his tunic, having lost his standard during the battle, as a rallying cry.
